CHUCK AND CHARI SMITH: With almost 100 years of combined ski teaching experience, will continue to teach an Oak Mt. Friday morning co-ed ski Program.
Chari (Charlotte Winkler) grew up skiing at Belleayre Mt. in the Catskills with her siblings. Her father, who immigrated from Germany, and a skier, helped layout trails at Belleayre.
Chuck (Charles) learned to ski at Oak Mt. and worked at Harry Wilbur’s ski shop. His father operated the T-Bar on the Oak Mt. beginner hill.
Chuck and Chari met at Delhi State University. Married and a family skiing career began. All three sons are instructors. Grandson Brendan teaches at Oak. Granddaughter Roarinbrook races for Winter Park. Granddaughters Ellie, age 4, skis the “blues”, and Teagen, age 10 months, won’t be far
behind. Yes, the daughter-in-laws are instructors too.
Chuck was first in the National Ski Patrol, then instructed at Belleayre and Oak Mt. He is now starting his 48th year at Gore Mt. Ski Center. Over the years he has held positions as head instructor, trainer, and assistant ski school director. He is now involved with Gore’s Senior co-ed
program, and the customer race hill, setting up private and corporate race events.
Chari taught skiing at Oak Mt. for 10 years, and was Assistant Director for the latter three. She is now starting her 35th year at Gore Mt.  Over 25 years ago Chari started, and still teaches, the “For Women Only” program, and also teaches the “Ladies Escape” program.
Both have taught the Gore Regional School Program for over 30 years. Chuck and Chari are Certified members of the Professional Ski Instructors of America Association. They participate in PSIA clinics every two years to keep up with skills and teaching methodology.
